Cyprus – the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, covering an area of 9,251 square kilometres. The easternmost island in the Mediterranean lies in splendid isolation: 105 kilometres from Syria to the east, 75 kilometres from Turkey to the north and 380 kilometres from Egypt to the south.
Life on the island is full of character and contrasts – cool cedar forests in the mountain ranges give way to golden, sun-drenched beaches; the calm and timelessness of the villages give way to the light and gaiety of cosmopolitan towns. Wherever you go – you will end up by the sea! Distances on Cyprus are pleasantly short thanks to modern motorways and a network of secondary roads: crossing the island from west to east takes about 5 hours.
There is no warmer island in the Mediterranean than Cyprus – the sun shines here 340 days a year! «Summer» begins in April and ends in November. The swimming season opens in April, when the water warms to +20-22ºC and the air to +23-25ºC; from May to October the water temperature is +23-25ºC and the air +28-35ºC. From November to March – it’s spring! The water temperature rarely drops below +18ºC, and the air below +15ºC. The beaches of Cyprus are considered among the best in the Mediterranean, and have been recognised by the European Union for their cleanliness with the «Blue Flag» award.
