Akamas — Land and Sea

For true adventure-seekers, and for those who love the unusual, we have designed a special adventure expedition to Akamas. This combined excursion includes a minibus ride and a trip on a glass-bottom boat. We will make our way slowly through forests, canyons, waterfalls and deserted beaches — be ready for endless challenges, hikes, swimming and fun. This will be a day of discovery and genuine contact with nature.

Our journey will begin with a visit to Petra tou Romiou, the birthplace of Aphrodite. Some will be captivated by photography, others will decide to swim, and others still will search enthusiastically for heart-shaped pebbles — finding one is said to promise a great love.

We will then drive on to Latchi, board a boat, and explore the bays and coastal islands. We will enjoy the astonishingly clear, turquoise water and sheer cliffs, and look out for Mediterranean turtles and sponges. We will stop in a beautiful bay to swim and snorkel (masks and snorkels are provided free of charge).

On our return, we will enjoy a delicious seafood lunch with homemade wine at one of Latchi’s seafront restaurants.

We will head to the Baths of Aphrodite – the legendary refreshing spring where Aphrodite bathed while waiting for her beloved. Legend has it that anyone who washes their face in the spring’s cool water can restore their youth.

We will end our excursion at the Monastery of Saint Neophytos, founded in the late 12th century by the Cypriot hermit and writer Neophytos. We will see the Enkleistra, carved into the mountainside, home to some of the finest Byzantine frescoes dating from the 12th to the 15th century.

Throughout the journey, you will be accompanied by an experienced guide who will share fascinating details about the island’s history, geology and surrounding flora and fauna.

EXCURSION DURATION: from 8:00 to 17:00.

MEALS: lunch is included in the price.

USEFUL TIP: we recommend wearing comfortable shoes, bringing swimwear, and don’t forget your camera.

INTERESTING FACT: some scholars believe the word “Akamas” derives from “akaftos”, meaning “unburnt”. This theory is based on the records of the renowned Cypriot chronicler Leontios Machairas, who described how Arab conquerors (known to Europeans as Saracens), during one of their raids on Cyprus, burned the island to the ground — all except Mount Akamas, which survived and was thus named the “unburnt one”
